Sprawling over almost 800,000 acres of Colorado and Mojave Desert land as well as the Little San Bernardino Mountains, Joshua Tree National Park offers an amazing way to experience the ecosystems of all these vastly different desert regions. Named for the species of tree that grows throughout the Mojave Desert area, the park displays all types of geological formations, including canyons, alluvial fans, granite monoliths, metamorphic rock outcrops and more. Hiking and horseback riding are two of the best ways to journey through the park, and biking is allowed along roads open to vehicles. Some of the distinctive formations in the park include Skull Rock, Keys View and Cottonwood Spring. Located north of Cathedral City, about 150 miles east of Los Angeles, the huge park is just east of San Bernardino National Forest.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicle $15; Individual $5.
